Punjab Governor’s spouse Perven Sarwar on Friday said that women empowerment and education, interfaith harmony, and rural development are imperative to compete with the rest of world. She also assured flood victims of full cooperation in rehabilitation to address their problems. She was talking to farmer convention arranged by the University of Agriculture Faisalabad in which hundreds of affectees from Athara Hazari and Chiniot participated. She said that tangible steps were taken to bring the life to the normalcy in the flood affected areas. She said that country was blessed with talented and hardworking people. It was the devastating floods that took many lives and caused the agricultural and infrastructure losses. Talking about women, she said that women empowerment was the prerequisite to make the development as they comprise more than 50 percent of population. She said that no nation can progress without the participation of women in socio-cultural activities. She said that a large number of the population is associated with agricultural sector and living in rural areas. She said that rural women must be equipped with the rays of education to play their due role in the prosperity of the country. She also stressed the need for inter-faith harmony. She handed over the UAF Unigold breed hens and cocks; wheat and vegetables seeds among the participants of convention hailing from flood-hit areas. She also praised the initiatives of UAF for the academia, research, rural and agricultural development. UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that the government has launched massive programme for the rehabilitation process. He said that at the time of flood calamity, the teams of varsity distributed the vaccinations for the livestock. He said we had surveyed the school children in Athara hazara and rehabilitation would be started soon. He said the university was taking all out efforts for the rural development of the country. Director General Extension Dr Anjum Ali Bhuttar said that as many as 16 lakh acres of 21 villages of Punjab were disttroyed. He said that the government had launched a scheme to provide Rs 10,000 for one acre of the flood hit- areas. The disbursement of money has been started from November 1. He urged the farming community to adopt the measures that will increase the productivity. Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof Dr Muhammad Arshad said that the country is blessed with the tremendous resources. There is the need to tap these resources. He urged the farming community to shun the traditional way of farming. Dr Makhdoom from Ayub Agricultural Research Institute said that 80 percent of the food victims are farmers. He said that weeds cause upto 40 percent of reduction in the productivity of wheat. Livestock Production Research Institute Research Officer Dr Javed Iqbal said that vaccination for the livestock saves them many diseases. The Government had launched the vaccination scheme for the flood hit areas. He said that in the flood areas, mud contamination feed causes diseases in the animals. Chairman Department of Agronomy Prof Dr Ehsan Ullah Chahal said that the convention will help the farming community to rehabilitate their lands.
