The Punjab Government has approved establishment of Punjab Bio-Energy Institute at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad in order to address energy crisis through alternative source. The Government has allocated as many as Rs 499 million for the PC1 of the project. Initial work on the project has been started while it will be completed in 36 months. The project is aimed at strengthening the research and development activities in the energy and environment sectors and the nexus of energy with the agriculture. It is also meant for skill training and outreach programme in a bid to promote the bio-gas operated tubewells to supplement the crop irrigation. As many as 10 labs will be set up under the project. There are about 72 million animals (cows & buffaloes) besides 81 million tons per year of crop biomass and about 785 million birds in poultry estates across the country. Bioenergy is produced from organic matter, derived from plants or animals. Organic matter used to produce bioenergy is called biomass or bioenergy feed stocks. The energy biomass produce can be converted into advanced second generation liquid biofuel. The establishment of the “Punjab Bioenergy Institute (PBI)” for the development, operation & maintenance and training purposes of bioenergy systems will help in producing tangible R and D activities in the said sector. UAF has well qualified and strong faculty in Biological, physical and Engineering Sciences.
