Delegation of Vita Pakistan visits UAF

A master plan is being mapped out to make the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, the first ever Green University, free from pollution in the country. In the first phase, a five mega watt solid waste power generating plant would be set up in collaboration with a private firm. This was stated by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan at a meeting with Vita Pakistan delegation led by its president Mahbob Ali Manji along with technical team. Dean Faculty of Agri Engineering and Technology Dr Rai Niaz Ahmad, renowned lawyer Abdullah Malik, Treasurer, UAF Rana Abdul Ghafoor, Public Relations and Publications Principal Officer Prof Dr Jalal Arif and other notables were also present at the meeting. Mahboob Ali said that the country is blessed with uncountable natural resources enabling it to overcome electricity crisis within two years by devising a proper planning. He said that generation of geothermal electricity across the globe was on the rise. By using the said technology, Pakistan can generate cheapest per unit power costing only six cent while the thermal power costs 18 cent per unit. He stressed the need to promote the geothermal power in order to wade out the challenge. He said that the southern coastal area in the country was comprising 1300 kilometers which has the potential to run 15 wind power units in a kilometer to generate 75 megawatt of electricity. He said that required speed of wind to run the units is eight kilometer per hour whereas the coastal area is blessed with the wind speed of 50 kilometer per hour which is a gift of nature that must be utilized. UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar A Khan said the transforming of UAF towards a Green campus was aimed at ending the pollution from the country by setting a model to the other institutions. He said that issue of pollution was the grave concern and it is the need of the hour to more expediting the effort to end the curse from the country. He stressed the need to social mobilization in this regard by sensitizing the public about the hazard of pollution and climate changes. He said that the educational institution had to produce knowledge regarding other ways of power generation in order to help the government to end the crisis.
