Breast cancer kills 40,000 women countrywide a year whereas around 90,000 cases of breast cancer are reported annually, said University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor (UAF) Dr Muhammad Ashraf.

He addressed one-day seminar on breast cancer arranged by Faculty of Veterinary Sciences UAF. He said that there are 36 types of cancers in the world and the among those, the breast cancer is at top three. Talking about world scenario of all cancers, he said cancers cases are rising rapidly worldwide as 18.1 million new cases were reported in 2018 globally. Among them, 9.6 million people lost their lives due to the life-taking disease. He said that one in eight men and one in 11 women deaths are occurred due to the disease. He said that cancer kills people in the developing countries with a high rates compared to developed countries because the diseases is detected at its advance stages. Talking about breast cancer, he said that more women fell prey to breast cancer in Pakistan due to lack of awareness. He added that in our society, women are reluctant to go to hospital for screenings and checkup or discuss cancer even within their family. Talking about various causes, Pro-Vice Chancellor Faisalabad Medical University Dr Hina Ayesha said a risk of breast cancer includes for whose women who don’t feed milk to their infants, whose maturity starts before age and those who have history of cancer in their family or those who have had hormone treatment. She said only five minutes were required for the self-assessment about the disease. UAF Professor Dr Tariq Javed called for making the proper check-up for prevention and the early treatment of disease. He stressed upon the participators to conduct breast mammography and self-assessment. He said that early detection of cancer at early stages rises the chances of survival manifold. He said that young women are more frequently reporting with the cancer in the country. Dr Aisha Khatoon and Dr Zunaira also spoke.
