Experts have stressed upon entomologists to play their pivotal role to cope with devastating affects of sucking and chewing insects causing loss of billion of rupees to cotton. They were addressing annual function of Department of Entomology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Chairing the session, Dean Faculty of Agriculture Dr Muhammad Amjad said that entomology had gained immense importance due to new insects amid the climate changes. He said that agriculture was the backbone of our economy and poverty alleviation was directly linked to the sector. He called for stepped-up efforts to overcome the potential threat of pests that are responsible for the loss of billions of rupees to national economy. He was of the view that modern trend to overcome the plant pest can not only increase the productivity but also decrease the losses. He said the Department of Entomology had produced numerous experts who worked day and night to uplift the sector. He lauded the steps being taken on the part of department for the development of the agriculture sector. Entomology Chairman Dr Jalal Arif said that young entomologists have a bright future. He added that pesticides industry has the business of the Rs 6 billion. He viewed that the UAF was making all out efforts to address the problems of the agriculture sector. He congratulated Assistant Professor Dr Waqas Wakil for his appointment as DG Plant Protection by the Federal Public Service Commission. He said that the university had emerged first-ever Pakistani institution ranked among the top 100 universities of the globe. He said that Department has produced several experts who enjoyed the high position in the government and public institution, He said that the his Department is the partnered with the Government on the various projects including MRL, dengue eradication, IPM, and cotton insects.
