Experts at a seminar said that the country can earn heavy foreign exchange by adopting modern horticulture practices and its promotion. Experts at a seminar said that the country can earn heavy foreign exchange by adopting modern horticulture practices and its promotion. The seminar on role of Higher Education Commission in the promotion of horticulture was arranged by Institute of Horticulture Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Addressing on the occasion, Dean Faculty of Agriculture Dr Muhammad Amjad said that fruits and vegetables have a comparative advantage. He said that the demand for the horticulture produces is increasing with each passing day and its values is higher than across the globe than wheat, rice, and maize He said the net income of farmers from fruits and vegetables is higher than that from the cereal crops. He said the horticultural crops contributed to commercialization of rural economy, which is characterised by increased trade and marketing. He said that the HEC since it inception in 2002 had played a marvelous role by ensuring quality education, producing manpower and research. He said as a towering beacon of hope for the youth, the HEC started its services in 2002 and with a committed and dedicated mission, accomplished a huge series of magnificent success within 15 years. IHS Director Dr Aman Ullah said that the horticulture sector has great potential to generate the income through value addition. He said that mango has less shelf life and if we apply the modern trends that will help export it. He said dates can be cured and processed to earn a large amount of foreign exchange.
