As many as 1.9 billion obese or overweight adults worldwide are vulnerable to various diseases including heart attack, diabetes, and cancer whereas insufficient physical activities are increasing 30 percent risk of mortality.

As many as 1.9 billion obese or overweight adults worldwide are vulnerable to various diseases including heart attack, diabetes, and cancer whereas insufficient physical activities are increasing 30 percent risk of mortality. This was stated by renowned cardiologist Dr Naeem Aslam during his keynote address at the seminar titled obesity and heart diseases arranged by Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad at New Senate Hall, UAF. The session was chaired by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan. Dr Naeem Aslam said that life style of people is changing in term of eating junk food, lack of daily walk, limited exercise, and spending more than 2 hours daily on watching television or internet. These are leading factors to the obesity. He said, approximately, 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to insufficient physical activity. Referring towards a recent research, Dr Naeem Aslam said waist parameter defines a male obese with 40 and 25% body fat and for female it is 35 inch and 35% body fat. He said that according to World Health Organization, the world obesity had doubled in the last three decades. He was of the view that most of the world population live in the countries where the obesity and overweight kills more people than underweight. He said that even the children are suffering from obesity due to lack of physical activities in school as well as home. He stressed upon the need to adopt at least 30 minutes moderate physical activity for five days or three times vigorous activity a week. He said that in the next four years, the US half population and 20 percent China's population will be obese that will lead towards more mortalities. UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan showed his concern the sport activities were showing a decline trend among the youth. He said the UAF was making all-out efforts to promote culture of sports and state of the art facilities were being provided to the students. He said that in the modern era, the lifestyle had changed and the people are using the junk food that is the reason of obesity. He called for educating the people about the hazard of the obesity. The healthy food and life style reduces the risk of the many diseases. He also stressed upon the need to adopt preventive measures by saying that prevention is better than cure. Dean Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences Prof Dr Masood Sadiq Butt said that the his faculty had launched BS Human Nutrition and Dietetics Programme to produce the skilled manpower in the field.
