The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has developed an innovative technology titled Flow Velocity Meter to curb the water theft and help regulatory authorities to ensure transparency in water distribution.

The technology demonstration was inaugurated by UAF Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asif Tanveer in front of Iqbal Auditorium. The Principal Investigator of the technology Dr Uzair Qamar developed the technology along with MS students Engineers Osama Tariq, Akbar Ali, and Haseeba Munir. The event was arranged by Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization, UAF. Talking on the occasion, Dr Asif Tanveer said that per capita water availability has reduced to 900 cubic meter which was 5000 at the time of inception of the country. He said Pakistan is placed in the list of red zone of water secure countries. He said that we should take extra measures to fight the challenge. If an effective water strategy is not adopted, the per capita water availability can decrease to 500 cubic meters by 2040. He lauded the efforts of the said technology developers for fighting the menace of the water theft at the national level. Dr Uzair Qamar said that the water regulatory authorities as well as farming community can get benefit from it. He said that it is easy to move. It transmits water discharge value to analyze the water theft. He was of the view that it will prove a breakthrough to address the issue of water theft at the national level. It could cost from Rs 1.25 lakh to 1.5 lakh., he added. Director ORIC Zahir Ahmad Zahir said that the university was making all possible measurers to develop the demand driven research work especially to the address the problems of the agriculture sector. He said that the university has strengthened its academia industry linkages that will prove a milestone to develop knowledge based economy.
