Hands-on training titled "application of genomics in plant breeding" arranged by the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics (PBG), University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Saturday concluded. The prize distribution ceremony was chaired by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan while Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof Dr Muhammad Arshad and PBG Department Chairman Prof Dr Abdus Salam also spoke on the occasion. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said there is a need to fill actual productivity and potential productivity gap by adopting appropriate strategies and modern technologies to fight the issues like food insecurity, land degradation, water-logging and salinity etc. He said genomics, the modern science of genetics, has provided breeders with new tools and novel approaches to perform their tasks with high efficiency. He said that University was offering state-of-the-art curriculum for all degree programmes as curriculum revising is regular feature of the varsity. Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof Dr Muhammad Arshad urged the researchers to make all possible efforts for the development of the country. He said that it is the era of challenges and urged the scientists to think out-of-the-box. He said that the University has produced 102 PhDs in a year. Prof Dr Abdus Salam said that the world is making the progress with a large pace. He said that it is need of the hour to expedite the efforts for addressing the issues of people and agricultural development of the country. Dr Zulfiqar Ali and Dr Shah Nawaz also spoke on the occasion.
