Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia and the number of such patients is increasing as it kills nearly 40,000 women every year in the country. It was stated by speakers at the awareness seminar and walk on breast cancer arranged by Institute of Rural Home Economics in collaboration with Pink Ribbon Pakistan as part of drive aimed at fighting the diseases in which tens of girls students and women faculty members participated. Addressing on the occasion, Institute Director Dr Naheed Abbas said that situation of breast cancer is alarming, demanding awareness among the people to fight the increasing fatal disease. She urged the women to make the proper check-up for prevention and the early treatment of the disease. She said literacy, education and information can play a vital role in decreasing its spread. She suggested making disease as the part of curriculum. She said that women’s hesitance to discuss the disease is one of cause for the high number of breast cancer patients in the country. Dr Humaira Arshad, Assistant Professor, Punjab Medical College said we need to educate women about self-examination and the need to see a doctors if they feel a breast lump. She said if cancer was detected at early stages, chances of survival increases manifold so people should be given awareness for early detection of the cancer. Lecturer Binish Asad said that young women are more frequently reporting with the cancer in Pakistan. The cancer is becoming the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Lecturer Hina Iftikhar said that the activities are meant to raise the awareness among the women.
