FAISALABAD Aug 1: The society is facing a plight of inadequate communication skills that must be addressed by polishing verbal and nonverbal interaction for a better civilization, peaceful environment, and conflict resolution among the masses. It was stated by speakers at a one-day workshop on Communication Skills Development for faculty members arranged by the Literary Society of the Department of English and Linguistics, the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. It was held on the directives of UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali. Chairing the session, Dean Faculty of Arts and Humanities Dr Shazia Ramzan said in the world of global village, effective communication is the ladder of success at the every step of life, essential to fight the odds whereas no one can follow his dreams sans successful communication. She said that understanding and respect for others opinions, selection of words, confidence, appropriate pace, body language, empathy, active listening and others are essence of effective communications. Dr. Asim Aqeel, Chairman of the Department, emphasized that effective communication is crucial for success in every aspect of life, enabling individuals to convey their ideas, negotiate, and build strong relationships. He highlighted the importance of understanding others' perspectives, cultural values, and traditions in effective communication. He said that that confidence and appropriate pace are essential when conveying ideas effectively. He said: “active listening and audience engagement ensure meaningful interactions” The event was conducted by Dr. Warda Azhar, Assistant Professor at Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF). She emphasized that confidence, appropriate pace, active listening, and audience engagement are essential for effective communication. The use of visual aids in teaching can significantly enhance clarity and retention, and effective communication skills can also help resolve conflicts and issues peacefully. UAF Librarian Umar Farooq encouraged participants not only to develop a reading habit, noting that books are excellent companions that can broaden one's knowledge and perspectives, but also emphasized the importance of utilizing the University’s rich digital resources to support research, learning, and professional development. Dr Atta Ul Mustafa urged the people to use the simple language and compose speaking patterns before the audience. The workshop was attended by faculty members from the Department of English & Linguistics and PARS campus, as well as 12 library interns.
