Faisalabad Oct 26: Ishtiaq Hassan, Director General Agriculture (Farms and Training) Punjab, has said that food security and agricultural development can be ensured by promoting high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties among the farmers, and strengthened ties between agricultural scientists and farmers. He expressed these views while addressing the Farmer Field Day at Government Seed Farm Gojra as the chief guest, which was organized in collaboration with the Directorate General Agriculture (Farms and Training) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The purpose of the event was to promote nutrient-rich and climate-change-resilient crops. On this occasion, Dr. Romeo, International Agriculture and Farming System Specialist, FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, along with the FAO project team, visited the demonstration plots. Dr. Ishtiaq Hassan said it is essential to deliver modern technology to the farmers' doorstep for food and nutrition security. He highlighted the importance of adaptive research as well as increasing utility of millet. Dr. Muhammad Tariq, Director Agriculture Coordination, appreciated the strong partnership between FAO and the Directorate in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Dr. Noushaba Nargis, Farm Manager, and Dr. Saleem Ashraf briefed the participants about the ongoing experiments, followed by a sensory evaluation of millet varieties with active participation from farmers. Abid Manzoor, Director Adaptive Research Farm Sargodha, shared his experiences regarding the demonstration plots managed in Sargodha. More than fifty farmers participated in the event.
