FAISALABAD March 12: Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has urged agricultural scientists to come up with tangible steps in order to uplift the agriculture sector, increase per acre productivity and alleviate the poverty from the country. He was talking to Prof Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, the Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture Faisalabad in a meeting at Punjab House Islamabad. He said the government is committed to strengthen the sector which is backbone of our economy. He said we have to take concrete measures on scientific bases for becoming self-sufficient in the sector. He also urged all agricultural universities to pace up efforts to address challenges in arid agriculture areas also for better crop. He said UAF had valuable services in the development of agriculture and hoped that it would continue to play its role in the coming years too. Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali said that the UAF had introduced new germplasm for heat-tolerant wheat, durum-wheat, soybeans, brassica, okra, maize, industrial hemp, chickpea, quinoa, sorghum, mango, citrus, cotton and others. He said along with agro-zoning of the entire province, the university has also recently launched the Kisan-360 app to provide guidance to farmers. He said the university has taken initiative to maximize the production of seed and market it under academic-industry linkages and established seed processing plant.
