FAISALABAD June 17: University of Agriculture Faisalabad in collaboration with Sugarcane Research and Development Board has launched four-week comprehensive training for 15 Sudanese professionals on sugarcane production technologies followed by industry visit. UAF Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali while welcoming the delegation said that such collaborations are the need of time to tackle the challenges of climate change. He added that in Pakistan, sugarcane provides raw material to the 2nd largest agro-based sugar industry. The country sugarcane production increased by 6.2 percent to 89.45 million tonnes in 2025-26 , driven by a 3.7 percent improvement in yield to 73,200 kg/ha . SRDB CEO Dr Shahid Afghan said that SRDB is aimed at strengthening existing capacities while systematically identifying and addressing gaps across the entire sugarcane supply chain—from growers and input management to the processing industry and onward to efficient sugar distribution for end consumers. He also lauded the steps being taken on the part of UAF. The initiatives is taken by Department of Plant Breeding and Genetic (PBG) and delegate received for training at UAF by Dr Shahid Afghan, CEO SRDB, Mr. Jamal (Advisor to Sudanese President), Prof. Dr Asif Tanveer (consultant SRDB) Chairman PBG Prof Dr Azeem Iqbal and Dr. Muhammad Munem Khan (Focal person). The delegation visited the Center for Food Security; and Seed Center.
